Beautiful
young Irena (Kinski) has a strange connection with animals
and a complete aversion to sex. In fact, she has remained
a virgin, troubled with confusion and fear of her sexual identity.
She travels to New Orleans to meet with her long lost psychotic
brother Paul (McDowell), and is alarmed when he tries to sleep
with her. She is even less comfortable when she learns her
familys true history of feline gods, sacrifices,
unnatural animal/human relations and a cursed bloodline that
dictates the only sexual relations her family can safely have,
are with each other. Intercourse outside of the bloodline
brings forth well, a lot of very nasty circumstances.
Irena starts up a relationship with a sensitive zookeeper
(Heard), loses her virginity, and begins a journey through
one of the bloodiest sexual awakenings that Cinema has ever
seen. An incredible erotic horror film from Paul Schrader
(screenwriter of TAXI DRIVER, RAGING BULL, LAST TEMPTATION
OF CHRIST, director of AFFLICTION, MISHIMA), writhing with
fantastical perversion, surrealistic beauty and grotesque
brutality. One of the best horror films of the 80s, CAT PEOPLE
is poetic to the extremes, visually stunning and absolutely
not for the squeamish. Features an unforgettable soundtrack
by Giorgio Moroder and David Bowie, and bears almost no relation
to the 1942 film that it allegedly remakes - there has never
been anything like it. (MD)
