Sympathetic and entertaining, Whale's film ranks alongside Browning's 'Freaks' as one of the first (and few) Hollywood 'celebrations' of the outsider, and has been read by many as drawing parallels with Whale's own experience of life as a gay director in a seemingly straight Hollywood.
